3 Tips For Wearing Makeup And Contact Lenses

The fact that you need contact lenses does not mean you cannot wear makeup. However, it does mean that you have to take special precautions to avoid the risk of infection. Here are a few tips to help you wear makeup and contacts the safe way.

Switch to Daily Lenses

Throughout the course of the day, there is a good chance that you might rub one or both of your eyes. When you rub your eyes, the makeup and other grime can sometimes get lodged beneath your contact. Even if your eye is not irritated, the presence of the foreign substance under the lens could lead to an infection.

With daily contacts, you would toss your used pair at the end of the day and start with a fresh pair in the morning. Using daily lenses helps to cut down on your chances of getting an eye infection.

Be Smart About Cleaning

If you cannot switch to daily lenses, you have to be smart with your cleaning regimen. For instance, before you remove or place your contacts, wash your hands and dry them thoroughly. You also need to avoid reusing cleaning solution. The old solution can sometimes be contaminated and can lead to an infection.

When you remove your contacts from their case to wear them, clean the inside of the case with your cleaning solution or hydrogen peroxide. Leave the case to air-dry.

Avoid Oil-Based Eye Makeup

Eye makeup, such as mascara, sometimes contains oil. The oil can sometimes cause the makeup to shift. When it does, it can find its way into your eyes. Sometimes, it will leave your vision cloudy, but it might not always be noticeable. However, the risk of infection is still there.

To protect your eyes, stick to oil-free products. You also need to avoid putting products close to the edge of your lids. You could inadvertently put makeup on the oil glands. The oil glands are necessary for creating the moisture that your eyes need. If the glands are blocked and your eyes dry out, you could experience discomfort while wearing the lenses. They are also more likely to fall out.

Talk to your eye doctor about other safety steps you can take to keep wearing makeup while you use contact lenses. If you do experience discomfort in the future after wearing makeup and it does not resolve itself within a day, schedule an examination.
